What characteristics should we seek in our delegates to the Democratic National Convention? Trustworthiness to support their candidate for which they were voted on to support, until and unless it becomes apparent that this candidate will not likely get the nomination.
I am a strong Barack Obama supporter both financially and through volunteer work. I’m upset by what has become of our government and our country. The partisan politics, the loss of integrity – the singular drive for power & greed. I’m concerned about the viability of our elections process. I will not be swayed in my belief that we need Barack Obama who has a drive to make the tough changes needed to turn this country around.
Knowledge and support of the issues set forth in the party platform.
I know the key issues supported by the Party and will listen carefully at the State Convention in Spokane to be sure to accurately and effectively represent the concerns and positions of Washington Democrats. I am NOT a single-issue flag bearer. I have a strong environmental background – having worked in the environmental management field for over 30 years. I am member of the LGBT community – my partner and I have been together for thirteen years and have raised two children together. Our son is currently serving in the US Navy and our daughter will be joining AmeriCorps in July. I spent several years of my childhood living in both Spain and Peru and have both an awareness of foreign policy and of how our country is perceived by others.
An ability to be persuasive and able to approach other delegates to encourage them to restore party unity by joining in support of the best candidate.
I’ve been very successful in my career in bringing people with diverse viewpoints and backgrounds together in support of a common goal. I would like to put this expertise to work for you in Denver. I am easy to get to know and very persuasive.
An ability to fearlessly discuss with party leaders their implementation strategies for the party platform.
I am outgoing and not afraid to approach new people or share my beliefs. I routinely write to our Senators and Congressman as well as to local elected leaders to ask for their support for a variety of issues. I majored in Political Science. My family gathered together to watch just about every Democratic National Convention since the early 1960s. I believe in democracy and our political process and in order to ensure its future success, I am compelled to actively practice what I believe and take action. I am a member of the Washington Stonewall Democrats, and am committed to Washington Conservation Voters. Over the years I have volunteered at local Democratic offices stuffing envrlopes, making phone calls, and driving people to the polls.
WHY I AM AN OBAMA DELEGATE: I believe in democracy as it was intended by our country’s founders. I grew up talking politics around the dinner table. My father, who just passed away last fall at 92, was an expert in public administration. He ended has career at the Eagleton Institute of Practical Politics at Rutgers University. Both of my parents were the only democrats in their family. From them, I learned that I can do anything. That I can believe in institutions. Today, however, my belief in the institution of democracy is sagging. I believe in democracy and our political process and in order to ensure its future success, I must actively practice what I believe it and take action. I’m so saddened by what has become of our government and our country. The partisan politics, the loss of integrity – how power & greed have overtaken so many. How some people will do anything to win and at any cost to the American public they were elected to serve. I’m concerned about the viability of our elections process. Today I have a glimmer of hope for democracy, our country, and the world. That hope is being brought to me in the form of Barack Obama who is not afraid to be genuine & honest & lead people. He is not afraid to lead the new generation of voters. The generations following the Baby Boomers have had precious few positive examples or models of good government or great leadership -- until now! My demographics are largely supporters of Hilary Clinton. But…as a feminist, I believe in electing the right person for the job regardless of whether that person is a man or a woman. In this instance, I believe that the right person is Barack Obama. Barack Obama has a willingness to do things differently. There’s a saying that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect different results. For 27 years, there has been either a Bush or Clinton in the White House - starting in 1981, when George HW Bush became Vice-President. For different results we must vote for someone who proposes to do things differently. The “experience argument” being waged against Obama epitomizes the definition of insanity. The experience people are suggesting, is experience in doing things the same way they’ve always been done. We need somebody who doesn't look or act just like the Republicans.
