Gaurab Bansal

I am a 30 year old attorney, former public school teacher, Obama organizer and fundraiser, co-founder of South Asians For Obama Seattle and proud member of the South Asian community. I was among the final 6 candidates for male delegate from the 7th Congressional District.

I would like to briefly introduce you to my background and why I would be a good candidate to receive your vote in Spokane for At-Large Delegate. I believe I would make a strong national delegate based on what I have done for the Obama campaign over the last 14 months, my personal experiences and skill set, and my commitment to future Obama campaign and community involvement.

In addition, the Washington Delegation currently lacks representation from the Puget Sound South Asian community. I believe strongly that at least one member of our community (whether it is me or someone else) should represent this vibrant and growing constituency. There is much to be gained by including passionate South Asian supporters in the Delegation and the State Party generally as we build towards the General Election.

(1) I have devoted my energy and passion to the Obama campaign for over 14 months.

· Founder of South Asians For Obama, Seattle – Founded Puget Sound chapter of national network of South Asian Americans supporting Senator Obama;

· 46th LD Co-Coordinator – Facilitated 10 presentations and 8 trainings regarding the caucus process; Organized 150+ volunteers in 46th LD; Co-coordinated the 46th LD team that tripled caucus turnout from 2004 and helped bring Senator Obama a 70%-30% victory in the 46th LD;

· Northwest Finance Committee Member – Serve on Senator Obama's official Northwest Fundraising team; Raised over $$$ for Senator Obama;

· Host & Organizing Committees – Served on Organizing Committees for each of Senator Obama's campaign visits to Seattle in June & December 2007; Brought new people into the process and brought voters to Obama Campaign events as early as June 2007; Organized support for Senator Obama in South Asian American and Young Professional communities; and

· Grassroots Education Policy Committee Member – Served on the Obama national campaign's Grassroots Education Policy Committee that helped formulate and review campaign positions on various public education issues.

I am proud of my steadfast support of this great campaign and my collaboration with countless grassroots organizers throughout the Puget Sound over the last year.

(2) My ability to keep a cool head and my legal know-how would make me an effective member of the Washington Delegation.

· I keep a cool head in stressful situations. As a former public school teacher and Teach For America alumnus working in some of our nation's most underserved schools, I know what it takes to maintain an unflinching focus while working calmly, patiently and purposefully with large groups in order to achieve specific goals. I do not get rattled.

· I understand complex rules and can teach others how to navigate complicated processes. My legal education allows me to understand complicated rules and procedures under significant pressure and time constraints. I will quickly know my way around the Convention Floor, its rules and its procedures. I will be your ally in Denver no matter what type of situations and/or unforeseen events occur.

· I remain focused on the prize. My teaching and legal backgrounds allow me to keep my eyes on the ultimate prize – nominating and electing Senator Obama – no matter what events may transpire in Denver. I know how to tune out noise and relentlessly pursue the objectives in front of me. I will work alongside you to achieve our collective goals and bring our party together.

· I speak with poise. I would make Washington Democrats proud when the world watches the Convention in August. I understand the importance of talking with delegates (Obama and Clinton) and members of the media with clarity, poise and generosity of spirit.

(3) My track record demonstrates that I will continue my work on behalf of the Obama campaign and our state.

· Future Work. My campaign involvement will reflect the new stage of the process we have recently entered. I will be registering voters (especially among South Asians, young people and young professionals), serving as a volunteer lawyer on voter protection efforts, fundraising for the campaign, and most importantly doing whatever it takes to bring our party together in the coming months. I have worked hard for 14 months so that I can work harder for another 5 months until we win in November.

It would be an honor to demonstrate that Senator Obama's supporters include strong supporters from the South Asian community. Senator Obama understands that what we have in common is greater than what divides us. As a testament to this shared vision, I would be honored to stand with you in Denver on behalf of our state. Together we can help lead the process of bringing our party together.

I commit to you that I will be a reliable Delegate, an ally, good travel company, and hopefully a friend by the end of this process.

I would be glad to talk further or answer any questions that you may have about my background before the State Convention (gaurab.bansal@gmail.com or 206‑992‑5846). Otherwise, I look forward to talking with you in Spokane.

I am asking you for your vote for one of the At-Large Delegate slots. Thank you.

- Gaurab
