Hello, my name is Jenna Clark!

Crystal

Home town: Bainbridge Island, WA

Legislative District:
23rd

Occupation:
Unemployed

Short Biography:

I'm a Disability advocate and have been for many years. I co-taught a disability awareness class for 6 years - I still do when asked - and before that talked to classes where needed. I very much enjoy talking to kids about disability and helping them learn tolerance. Three years ago I was partnered with a service dog, and since Crystal has been coming with me everywhere and helping me teach kids.

One of my favorite experiences with teaching came in the first years of the disability awareness program. In those first couple years, the program was only done when a child was getting teased or doing the teasing. In this particular class, one of the kids had some problems with social skills, was brighter than most of his classmates, and tended to tease others because of this. After the class - which consists of activities and a guest speaker - he came up to me, told me how much he enjoyed the class, and shook my hand. I heard a few weeks later that he was doing much better.

In what ways have you been instrumental in getting Obama nominated so far? I have blogged on various sites and done anything I could within my abilities. I've talked up his disability policy whenever and wherever possible, as it addresses issues that have never been addressed. I've tried to register voters (long(er) story relating to my disability) and will be continuing to (attempt to) register voters during the general election.
What do you plan to do going forward to ensure Obama gets elected? I'm already set to blog all through the general, as well as trying to share more YouTube videos. I also hope to join in future events to register voters and am dedicated to doing anything I can to Get Out The Vote.
What unique contribution have you made as a delegate that would make the delegation stronger because of your participation in it? In what way have you -- to quote the delegate selection guidance provided by the campaign -- "challenged the status quo and pushed for excellence" rather than "continuing to embrace and accept 'politics as usual'"? I bring a fresh perspective to the delegation - that of a "younger" (30) disabled woman. Rather than needing those services relating to Social Security Disability and the like, I come from a point of needing the services to *enter* the workforce. The most unique contribution, in my opinion, is sharing my perspective and showing that disability does not preclude a person from the political process - conversely, people with disabilities have a vested interest and are beginning to get the visibility to secure needed programs and services.
How do you plan to use what you experience and learn in Denver leading up to the general election? I plan on sharing my experiences locally, on my blog, and also sharing my experiences with a service dog at such an event. I often speak to kids, and will be sharing my journey to Denver and beyond to further teach them that a disability does not preclude you from living your life.

WHY I'M A DELEGATE FOR OBAMA:

TOP 5 Reasons I Like Obama
  1. His policies
  2. His attitude
  3. His oratory

Because I finally have hope. Disability issues are finally being given the exhaustive attention they both need and deserve. I've been interested in politics for a long time and have voted ever since I was of age, but this is the first time I feel like the issues that affect my life are addressed by a candidate. I am not a single-issue voter and many of his other policies are in line with my own views, and I feel Sen. Obama is the candidate who can accomplish all we need to get this country back on track.
