Jody Rodgers Has A New Muscle

Working a button making press takes muscle, but I’m an IT geek and not predisposed to pumping iron. Therefore, my button making machine sat idle gathering dust. Then in February I saw Barack Obama at the Key Arena in Seattle. I was particularly inspired by his message that everyone is part of this campaign. Yes, we can. I wondered what I specifically could contribute. I knew Obama campaign materials were in short supply. Suddenly I and my button making machine had a mission! It started with making buttons for my precinct caucus, grew to sending buttons to Obama campaign headquarters and events in TX, MS, PA, NC, IN, WV, KY, OR, PR, MT and SD and continues with Obama button making parties and demos at delegate events, as well as handing them out everywhere I go. With the help of my wife and friends, we’ve hand pressed thousands of Obama buttons to give away. That’s a lot of new muscle and Obama gave it to me.

WHERE I COME FROM AND WHERE WE'RE GOING

My father, like his father before him served full careers in the Air Force. Except for the time I was in Louisiana I attended Department of Defense schools while growing up. A military upbringing probably isn't a typical foundation for someone devoted to progressive causes. The seeds of my political activism took shape while in high school in England. My frequent trips to London exposed me to large political protests including anti-apartheid events and protests against nuclear proliferation. I would often come home from London with literature from activist groups like Greenpeace, Amnesty International or animal welfare groups. Views that were polar opposite from what I had been exposed to on the military bases.

The exposure to these groups and movements set the stage for a life defined by being against things. I was against the WTO, against the war in Iraq, against Bush, against injustices, etc. So years of my life have been spent marching against these things, writing tons of letters to congress members and other public officials; always expressing my opposition to the ills of society and our government's policies.

But it wasn't until Barack Obama's campaign that I have finally been FOR something.

I can not articulate how exciting it is to be devoting my energy towards something that is rooted in the collective dreams of America and not the fears and anxieties that typically define the political landscape. I realize we have a long and hard road ahead of us and I am not naive to the challenges ahead of our country and this movement. But this beacon of hope has transformed my consciousness and I realize that the reality we seek will only come about if we put in the work into making it so. And as an Obama state delegate for Washington State I have already been fortunate enough to meet my peers who will help build this new America. Together we will be the leaders that will inspire others. We are the ones we have been waiting for.

TECH CORNER

Although the calendar may not state that Barack Obama will be the first president of the 21st Century I have great confidence that history will judge that he indeed was the first true president of this new century. With Dean's campaign four years ago we saw the glimmer of how the Internet could be essential tool in creating a network of connected supporters, raising money, and communicating at the speed of fiber. With the Obama movement we are stepping things up a notch, taking it out of beta if you will. This wiki is a great example of how we we will use the latest tools to connect and stay informed.

Hi Jody,

Thanks for sharing about yourself the other night, and thanks for the buttons. Man, my hand was getting sore after my measly 50 buttons worth--you've got a lot of will power put in the right direction--I am glad to see your creative energies going in such great directions. You've got me asking a lot of questions about the candidates thoughts on technology--I'm not even sure what a federal CTO would entail, but I'm excited for change in so many directions. If you have any recommended reads on Obama's technology rights stances, please pass them along.

Keep on Buttoning!
