Hello, my name is Mitchell Howard and I'm running for National Delegate, CD2

I'm Mitchell Howard, and I approve this photo!

Home town: Oak Harbor, WA

Legislative District:
10th LD

Occupation:
Quasi-retired Minister/Innkeeper

Short Biography:

I've lived in Island County for 15 years. A native of New York City, I was raised in a home that revered FDR and Adlai Stevenson. I've been active in politics in a variety of ways down the years.

In 1976, I was a delegate candidate in NY-31 supporting Fred Harris for President (weirdly, one of my fellow delegate-candidates was the now in/famous pollster John Zogby). In 1984, I was a staffer for the Clarke Co. (GA) Democratic Party, running the Mondale-Ferraro storefront HQ. In 2004, I was a Kerry delegate to Island County Convention. At the 2008 West Beach Precinct Caucus, I was one of the speakers who inspired most of the Clinton caucusers to move to Obama on the later votes. That felt good! On April 19, I was elected an alternate by the ICDC convention to the 2nd CD.

I've also been elected to two terms (1997-2005) on the Coupeville School Board. In the rest of my life, I've also been a Unitarian-Universalist minister (still am, though retired), an innkeeper, a husband and father, a 10-year officer of the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce (all small business people AREN'T GOP, after all!).

That's a start for an introduction.

WHY I'M A DELEGATE FOR OBAMA:
TOP 5 Reasons I Like Obama
  1. He's wiser than his years
  2. He looks like the future
  3. He was right, early, on the war
  4. What a smile!
  5. Not a bad jump shot, either
Confession: I'm one of those dreamers who, in early 2007, imagined a Gore-Obama ticket in 2008. Once it became clear Gore liked his current gig better, I started a drift toward Obama that became a passionate advocacy as the months went on. I read his books, and steeped myself in the spirit of this campaign, so winningly expressed in Obama's most memorable speeches. To me, he stands head and shoulders above all those others who have offered themselves as presidential candidates this cycle, in so many ways!

Barack is the kind of candidate we were inspired by when I was young. We must seize this moment and persist in the long fight to make him president of these U. S. of A. Our nation cries out for redemptive transformation. Here is a leader who knows that kind of change is only made from below. The movement we have built together will help him, once he is President, to keep the progress coming, and build the new governing majority that can right the ship and set a new course for a saner, happier, more sustainable future.
