At the end of that two week vacation I knew I was coming back to live in the northwest someday. That day was in January of 1980. I lived and worked in Tacoma until 2000. I moved to Seattle because of a change in employment. Things I Enjoy 1. Walking around Greenlake or the trails of Point Defiance 2. KCTS Public Television , Frontline and American Experience 3. After Barack gave the keynote speech in 2004. I told myself, if he ever runs for president he will have my vote. Feb. 10, 2007 I rushed home from work to watch his announcement speech on cspan. My emotions were off the chart as tears of joy flowed from my face. Tears for Barack's mother and father, if only they could see this day. Tears for my nephew whom I have been nurturing to follow in Barack's footsteps. Tears of thank you to God. The spirit of HOPE fills my home. The promise I made in 2004 has come to past. I will keep my convenant to work on his campaign. Superbowl 2008 while all my friends were watching the game. I was listening to Maria Shriver speak on following your own truth. Following her truth, lead her to an unscheduled vist to UCLA to endorse Barack Obama. Following my own truth has lead me to an unscheduled visit, to the world of democratic caucuses and becoming an Obama delegate. To follow my own truth, it is not enough for me to sit on the sidelines with a Obama yard sign or lapel button. It is not enough to lead my fellow teamsters in making phone calls and writing campaign postcards. It is not enough to encourage my friends and family to donate until it hurts. It is not enough to attend rallies and participate in Obama Works Projects. It is not enough to convince teens they too have a dog in this fight for Barack, even though they cannot vote. Their future is at stake. Barack has inspired us all, young and old alike to fight for the change we believe in. I believe my greatest strength to encourage others to give just a tiny piece of themselves to this election, is for them to see me give all I have. I must set the example of committment and sacrifice I am asking of others. That is why I am running to become a NATIONAL delegate for Barack Obama and I am asking for your VOTE. The election of Senator Obama as president is only the beginning. Then the hard work begins bringing our legislators on board. Those who are still loyal to special interest and not the people's interest. The special interest will not give up Corporate Welfare without a fight. President Obama will need us to remain FIRED UP and READY TO GO through out his first term. |
| For 20 years I have been working to improve my community. I began as a volunteer in the Chapter 1 Reading program at Franklin Elementary in Tacoma. What began as just 2 hours a week of tutoring eventually became two days a week. The principal had convinced me that just my presence among so many boys with no fathers in the home was a hugh contribution. So I found myself being a reading, math and writing tutor. I volunteered because the kids needed me and the teachers classes were to big for one on one attention. I put together several Black History assemblies for the children also. Contracted out to me and my associate by the Tacoma school district. I know that Senator Obama will follow thru on his promises to improve our education system from K-12. Then HIV/AIDS began to decimate the african-american community in the 90's. I worked as a volunteer for a program called "Brother to Brother" funded by the Pierce County Health Department as the project outreach coordinator. My work included the production and distribution of phamplets on safe sex. Also holding focus groups that educated the community into doing two things. 1.Learning how to protect oneself from being infected. 2. Encourageing those who are of high risk groups to be tested. This project was very successful in slowing the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in the community with the help of several forward thinking church pastors. On a personal level I cared for a friend until he passed away from the AIDS virus, and delivered food to guys sick with AIDS donated by the Chicken Soup Brigade. It has been and always will be my mission to advocate for those too weak to fight for themselves. Senator Obama's position on affordable health care for all resonates with me deeply. It is a policy who's time has come and the american people desperately need it. I work for Sears store #1009 where only the shipping and receiving dept. has a union. Local #117 Teamsters. We are not big enough where my position as shop steward comes with any extra financial benefits. I do my job in the interest of the team. I have held this position for 4 years and have assisted our business represenative negotiate a successful contract. I have informed my co-workers that I may have to resign my position as shop steward. To make good on my committments to the Barack Obama campaign. They have been supportive of me and understand the bigger picture we are working toward. My proudest day as a Teamster is when my union endorsed Senator Obama. Labor will have not only a friend but a partner in rebuilding America. I sincerely hope this brief summary, gives you some insight on who I am. I am committed to the election of Senator Obama to be our next president. Let me leave you with this quote I live my life by.
