Randy Gainer, Fighting for Civil Liberties, Organizing for Obama!

Randy Gainer - Barack Obama Delegates

Home town: Seattle, WA

Legislative District:
36th

Occupation: Lawyer

I've been the PCO for Precinct 1754 for four years and the Obama captain for the precinct for several months. I served as an Obama representative on the Credentials Committee at the 36th Legislative Caucus.

During my day job, I litigate disputes regarding computer technology and advise companies and individuals about computer privacy and security issues. When The New York Times revealed the Bush Administration's warrantless surveillance program in December 2005, I recognized that the program was a dangerous attack on our civil liberties and on the rule of law. I volunteered to organize other lawyers to help the ACLU try to stop the program. Working with 13 lawyers from my firm and five lawyers from the national office of the ACLU, we persuaded a federal judge in Detroit to order the Administration to stop the program in 2006. The government appealed the trial court's order but, before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the injunction, the Bush Administration agreed to stop conducting foreign intelligence electronic surveillance in the U.S. without approval from the FISA court. For more about the ACLU v. NSA case, see http://www.aclu.org/safefree/nsaspying/index.html.

Before I went to law school, I was an organizer for the United Steelworkers. I worked for the Steelworkers and other unions during and after law school. I later worked as a civil rights lawyer for the City of Seattle Human Rights Department where I oversaw the investigation of discrimination complaints and managed the city's women's and minority business program. I also worked as an Assistant Seattle City Attorney where, among other things, I drafted the first domestic partners benefits ordinance in Washington and lead the city's lawsuit to prevent investors from trying to "modernize" the Pike Place Market.

The delegates we need . . .
TOP 5 Reasons I Like Obama
He connects with all types of people.
He's positive instead of negative.
He's both intelligent and street smart.

He's inspiring.

He has a great sense of humor.
We need delegates to the National Convention who will make sure that the party's platform emphasizes the protection of civil liberties and respect for the rule of law. We can defeat terrorists without destroying the principles that helped make this country strong.

We need delegates who can help persuade Clinton delegates to support Obama and who can, if necessary, fight effectively against any Clinton effort at the National Convention to steal the nomination from Obama. Finally, we need delegates who have demonstrated they are committed to doing the grass roots organizing that will elect Obama in November. We will have work to do to explain to some of our neighbors how John McCain's policies are more of the same Republican nonsense.

I'm that kind of delegate. I will be honored to represent you and other Obama supporters at the National Convention if I'm elected. Delegates I'm supporting include Dave Morehouse and Suzi LeVine.
