| Roxana Boroujerdi Everett, WA 38th LD Self employed owner of Fun Times Ice Cream Supplier of Obama for President buttons to Snohomish County | Short Biography: I am an Iranian Moslem American woman. A campaign friend recently told me I should not write that I am a Moslem because it is not to my advantage. But Obama supports and represents all people. I believe Obama delegates will also. Like him, I am proud to be who I am whether it is easy or not. Barack Obama has said that when he was growing up a skinny African American kid with a funny name and a single mom, no one would have ever guessed that he would one day run for President of the United States. Later no one would ever think he would actually become President but he will. He had hope and he has given me hope. My parents split up when I was only two. I have two half sisters. I grew up mostly with my grandparents. No one really expected me to be the first in our family to graduate from college. I was also the first in my family to travel overseas. I was the first to truly stand up and fight for the causes I believe in. I believe strongly in Barack. Now I want to be the first in my family to be a National Delegate to the DNC. I think that I represent people who have hidden in the shadows since 9-11. I represent the misunderstood. I can relate to all people and make a great effort to understand their culture. I will represent everyone from Washington proudly. When I come back, I will continue to work hard to share all the information. As a journalism major in college, I will provide reports and work with the media to keep Barack in the spotlight in Everett. I will work for Obama until he is sitting in the White House. Then I will continue to work for Democrats in our state. Since the Iranian Revolution, there has not been a true conversation with the Middle Eastern people. Barack Obama says he will help to bridge that gap between American and other cultures. I am here hoping to represent the 11,000 Iraqis in Everett. I want to have a conversation with anyone who will listen. I want to represent all those who have had no voice. I had a cross burned on my yard once by the Klu Klux Klan. I had my house searched as a result of the Patriot Act. I became disabled as a result of a hate crime. There has been no conversation or peace under the Bush Administration. Obama will bring back peace, fairness, and simple kindness to the American people through conversation. I hope you will let me be your voice in Denver. |
When I was in high school, I saw many poor classmates sign up for the Vietnam War in order to have a job. Even now many people join because they feel they can find no other decent job. They sign up also because they believe the government must be right. But they quickly found out that when their time is up, they are not allowed to leave. They are held hostage, against their will. When they finally get home, they are not given the benefits promised. They do not receive medical benefits needed to help with PTSD and other issues. And they still can not find a decent job. How will the United States ever have an armed forces when troops now know this is how they will be treated? By supporting Barack we can bring the troops home quickly. We can restore faith in our military. We can use the money spent on war to instead provide decent jobs and have peace at home. When I was at Fresno State College I became a member of the Iranian American Friendship Student Association. It was the time of the Iranian Revolution. We were a group who wanted to have a conversation about culture in a peaceful setting. Instead we were met with anger and violence. We had a cross burned on our mosque lawn. We had them burned on several peoples homes, including mine. We had broken windows and racial slurs. My closest friend went back to Iran during this time. He was arrested at the Tehran airport and tortured. Another friend who went back was killed by the Shahs government. When I went to Iran, I went to a childrens movie which had a theme about freedom. A movie something like Bambi. But the Shahs guards arrived, surrounded the building and set it on fire. When people tried to escape, the guards shot at them. Is it any wonder that Iranians fought for their freedom. I joined many protests here. When the Eritreans in America were trying to help their families in their country win freedom from Ethiopia, I supported their cause. I have stood on picket lines for migrant farm workers. I worked in crime ridden Watts, California. Obama will have a discussion with all people and all countries. He will listen and try to learn about us all. He does not have in his mind as Hilary said last week to obliterate anyone. He will have a conversation with anyone who wants to discuss peace. Obama was attacked for saying he would meet and discuss peace with anyone, yet when ex-President Carter met with Palestinian Hamas Leaders last month, it barely received a mention in the press. Obama is the only candidate who was against the Iraq War from the beginning and the only one who can get us out. I have worked with the Iraqi refugee community for more than 10 years. My best friends have all narrowly escaped death from Saddam. All of them spent years in the refugee camp in the Saudi desert. Another friend has one leg three inches shorter than the other as a result of Saddams torture. Most suffer from PTSD. Many were not allowed to go to school in Iraq so they can not read or write in any language. They have suffered their whole lives. Many family members have died in the war now. Iraqis really do not want the United States there. They want to solve their own problems. For now though they have to do as the U.S. Bush orders or suffer even more consequences. My personal goal is to get every Iraqi American citizen in Everett to register, vote for Obama, and get the ballot turned in. Not an easy task when you do not read, write, or understand the voting system. However, I will make sure it gets done. I have distributed Obama buttons in English and Arabic and Iraqis wear them proudly. Obama will end the war and bring our troops home. He will still assist in other ways needed and stay in communication to support the Iraq government. He will make sure the Iraqi Americans here will be able to live in peace without prejudice. But he will bring our troops home. I am dedicated to Barack Obama. |
