Hello, my name is Shanna Sawatzki,
I would be honored to have your support for National Delegate from the 7th CD.
I saw Barack Obama's Speech from the floor of the Democratic National Convention in 2004, where my husband, Jason, was a Delegate for Howard Dean.
I was inspired! When he decided to run for President, I dove in, Head First, doing everything I could to get Obama Elected!

“The 7th CD is fortunate to have Shanna Sawatzki in our group and she not only has earned my vote to be a national delegate but should be written as #1 because of her longstanding, deep commitment to the Obama grassroots movement. To all of us who wanted to get involved early on, it was Shanna who guided us.Shanna was the liaison between the campaign and all the volunteers. She is not only incredibly smart and talented but an effective leader who goes out of her way to include everyone. When most of the country had no idea who Barack Obama was it was Shanna who was out there spreading his message and creating the grassroots movement in Washington.”

WHY I'M A DELEGATE FOR OBAMA:
TOP 5 Reasons I Like Obama
  1. He had the judgment and foresight to oppose the Iraq war from the start, and he’ll take that judgment and foresight with him to the White House.
  2. He is able to take "progressive" issues onto the mainstage and collect support for them as mainstream ideals. The Seattle Stranger put it best when they said: “Obama's liberal voting record, his position on the war, and his campaign priorities are firmly progressive. His promise lies in his ability to appeal to a wide cross section of Americans, and hopefully persuade them that these and other long-standing Democratic goals are mainstream no-brainers. It just might work."
  3. He doesn't take special interest money in his campaign, so he is only beholden to the American People.
  4. He wants us to take responsibility for our country and our government and acknowledges that he can't do it on his own.
  5. He inspires the best in all of us. He inspires me to have a more hopeful outlook and work toward changing American Politics so it won't alienate and embitter the American People.
One of the phenomenal aspects of this campaign is that it asks as much from its supporters as we ask of Barack Obama. It is a movement for change which will require not only incredible support, energy and enthusiasm for his campaign, but for our great nation as well into the Presidency of Barack Obama.

Over 15 months ago, I started this journey, volunteering for the campaign, and taking a leadership role in the Washington State for Obama Grassroots movement that has worked tirelessly to bring the change we are looking for to the White House through Barack Obama. Against all odds, we have nearly won the Democratic Party nomination, and we must continue our efforts to secure the nomination and elect Barack Obama.

When I was looking for ways that I could best help the campaign and grassroots movement, I realized I was one of the few early volunteers who were intimately familiar with the caucus process and WA Democratic Party organization in general. I immediately started working to get Obama supporters involved in the Democratic Party as PCOs, in order to help further his movement for change. I also educated organizers & volunteers on how the caucus process works, so they could help train others to be prepared for February 9th. We knew that being right on the tail of Super-Tuesday, we wouldn’t have a lot of advance time with the campaign, and we had to be ready in case it wasn’t over by then. It wasn’t, and we were ready.

I put together this page to ask for your vote for one of the 4 female slots to the national convention. I also wanted to take the opportunity to make this page a call to action. Barack Obama has said, “In the face of impossible odds, people who love this country can change it.” One of the best ways for us to do that is by getting active in our communities, our government and local Democratic Party. If we want to change the politics of cynicism into the politics of hope, we can best do it from the ground up, from within our own party.

I've learned I have a knack for making the Democratic Party more accessible to the average person, educating them about how the party structure is set up, connecting them to their LD meetings, and getting them engaged as PCOs within the Party. I want to take that to a broader level, getting our average citizens engaged in their government. It's going to take a lot to change politics in this country, and getting people active is step #1.

Here is information on how you can be an agent of change as a PCO and how to get elected (or re-elected) to a Democratic Party PCO position. I hope you all read it and consider it as a way to be the change we seek: http://www.obamadelegates.org/page/Be+an+Agent+of+Change--Become+a+PCO

The responsibility of a National Delegate is to 1) Cast an unwavering vote representing Washington State’s support for Senator Obama, 2) Work on garnering further support from Obama, be it from pledged delegates or unpledged superdelegates. 3) It is also an opportunity to attend optional trainings, breakouts, and caucuses to build coalitions, share ideas, and start MAKING CHANGE. When considering who to cast your vote for in the upcoming election, make sure you vote for someone who will take full advantage of the optional additional trainings at the convention, and bring those valuable new skills back to share with our group.

If I am elected to a national delegate slot, I will return to the 7th CD, FIRED UP and READY TO GO, sharing my experiences, using those coalitions built in not only winning in November, but to BE the change we want to see, and working to bring others with me. I plan to use this to help be a leader in helping the newly active, especially young people like me, expand their civic engagement within their communities. I will continue building the Democratic Party, and building engagement in our government at all levels.
