Hello, my name is Shanna Sawatzki,
I would be honored to have your support and vote for At-Large National Delegate. I saw Barack Obama's Speech from the floor of the Democratic National Convention in 2004, where my husband, Jason, was a Delegate for Howard Dean.
I was inspired! When he decided to run for President, I dove in, Head First, doing everything I could to get Obama Elected!

Obama At-Large/PLEO Candidate Questionnaire:
In what ways have you been instrumental in getting Obama nominated so far? I have been an active leader in the Washington for Obama Grassroots movement since February of 2007. My activities have included organizing events, canvasses, meetings, visibility events, fundraisers, caucus trainings, recruiting volunteers, PCOs, LD coordinators, Precinct Captains, coordinating with Obama for America on Obama visits, official activities, Grassroots Finance Committee Leadership Circle, Generation Obama, National Call Team and many other activities they have asked for assistance. I served as a Precinct Captain, Caucus Location Coordinator and a co-coordinator of the 46th LD for Obama. My outreach to other states has included serving as a Adoptive Precinct Captain for Harris County, TX area (remotely), traveling to Oregon to register voters, and volunteering in the San Diego Office while on a work trip. I coordinated the fundraising efforts for WA to send campaign materials to OH & TX. To encourage voters to support Sen. Obama, I’ve phone banked to IA, NH, NV, PA, CO, CA, OH, TX, OR, and several other states. To empower others to do the same, I organized or helped others organize several phone banking events to other states.
What do you plan to do going forward to ensure Obama gets elected? In short, everything I can. Currently, I am working with others on voter registration efforts in WA, including serving as a Precinct Organizer as part of the Neighborhood Challenge, and participating in voter registration events in the area. I am working on getting all of the enthusiasm and energy from the Obama campaign plugged into the Democratic party, particularly as PCOs so we can follow Sen. Obama’s message to “be the change we seek” in the Democratic Party. I plan to canvass/GOTV not only in the Seattle area to drive votes for Obama, but also work again down in the 8th CD to turn out voters for Barack Obama and Darcy Burner. If past work is an indicator of future performance, over the past 4 ½ years, I’ve volunteered for many campaigns, including Howard Dean, John Kerry, Darcy Burner, and for several more local and down-ticket candidates, such as state legislature, city council, and port commissioner races. In addition, I have served as a PCO since 2003, and served on the e-board of the 36th LD, served as a representative to the King County Democrats, and I’m now very active in my new district, the 46th LD, which I joined in January 08.
What unique contribution have you made as a delegate that would make the delegation stronger because of your participation in it? In what way have you -- to quote the delegate selection guidance provided by the campaign -- "challenged the status quo and pushed for excellence" rather than "continuing to embrace and accept 'politics as usual'"? 5 years ago, I considered myself a Democrat just in principle, but I wasn’t a card-carrying member because I was tired of the Democrats in Washington, DC caving to political pressure from the right or just not standing up for what they believed in, instead swaying with the wind of political polling data. Then a friend asked me, “How do you expect it to change from the outside?” One week later, I signed up to be a PCO and have been since 2003, working to create the change I wanted to see in the Party. When I started with the grassroots Obama group in early 2007, I was one of the few who were active in the Democratic party, and a big reason for that was that many people felt the same way I had in 2003. I took it as my personal mission/commitment to make the Democratic Party and caucus process more accessible. In my role as Political Outreach Coordinator in the Washington Grassroots, I sought to take the attitude of “being the change we seek” and bring it to the fantastic volunteers in the Obama campaign, encouraging them to continue their great work and join the Democratic Party, to change the party from the within, to “challenge the status quo and push for excellence” to change “politics as usual.” Early in the campaign, I held PCO informational breakout sessions at meetings encouraging people to become PCOs, to get involved in their local LD/County organization, help out with organizing their caucuses and getting out the vote to their caucuses. To make the process easier, I set up a PCO information webpage on the Obama08-wa.com website to guide people in what a PCO is and how to become a PCO. I mailed PCO filing forms to all 400+ Obama delegates and alternates in the 7th CD with information on what a PCO is, how they can change the party as well as information LD meetings and getting more involved. I also posted the information on the ObamaDelegates.org website. It’s working too! I know many others are sharing the same message statewide, and in the 7th CD, the monthly Democratic Party meetings are now flooded with new Obama supporters who are already working to impact change on a local, regional and national level. They are out registering voters, recruiting volunteers, passing resolutions, impacting the party platform, etc.
How do you plan to use what you experience and learn in Denver leading up to the general election? In addition to the floor responsibilities of a delegate, the convention is also an opportunity to attend optional trainings, breakouts, and caucuses to build coalitions, share ideas, and start MAKING CHANGE. I am committed to taking full advantage of these opportunities in Denver to bring back to Washington. If I am elected to a national delegate slot, I will return to Washington, FIRED UP and READY TO GO, sharing my experiences, using those coalitions built in not only winning in November, but to BE the change we want to see, and working to bring others with me. I plan to use this to help be a leader in helping the newly active, especially young people like me, expand their civic engagement within their communities. I will continue building the Democratic Party, and building engagement in our government at all levels. |

WHY I'M A DELEGATE FOR OBAMA: | TOP 5 Reasons I Like Obama | - He had the judgment and foresight to oppose the Iraq war from the start, and he’ll take that judgment and foresight with him to the White House.
- He is able to take "progressive" issues onto the mainstage and collect support for them as mainstream ideals. The Seattle Stranger put it best when they said: “Obama's liberal voting record, his position on the war, and his campaign priorities are firmly progressive. His promise lies in his ability to appeal to a wide cross section of Americans, and hopefully persuade them that these and other long-standing Democratic goals are mainstream no-brainers. It just might work."
- He doesn't take special interest money in his campaign, so he is only beholden to the American People.
- He wants us to take responsibility for our country and our government and acknowledges that he can't do it on his own.
- He inspires the best in all of us. He inspires me to have a more hopeful outlook and work toward changing American Politics so it won't alienate and embitter the American People.
| | One of the phenomenal aspects of this campaign is that it asks as much from its supporters as we ask of Barack Obama. It is a movement for change which will require not only incredible support, energy and enthusiasm for his campaign, but for our great nation as well into the Presidency of Barack Obama.
Over 15 months ago, I started this journey, volunteering for the campaign, and taking a leadership role in the Washington State for Obama Grassroots movement that has worked tirelessly to bring the change we are looking for to the White House through Barack Obama. Against all odds, we have nearly won the Democratic Party nomination, and we must continue our efforts to secure the nomination and elect Barack Obama.
When I was looking for ways that I could best help the campaign and grassroots movement, I realized I was one of the few early volunteers who were intimately familiar with the caucus process and WA Democratic Party organization in general. I immediately started working to get Obama supporters involved in the Democratic Party as PCOs, in order to help further his movement for change. I also educated organizers & volunteers on how the caucus process works, so they could help train others to be prepared for February 9th. We knew that being right on the tail of Super-Tuesday, we wouldn’t have a lot of advance time with the campaign, and we had to be ready in case it wasn’t over by then. It wasn’t, and we were ready.
I put together this page to ask for your vote for one of the 4 female slots to the national convention. I also wanted to take the opportunity to make this page a call to action. Barack Obama has said, “In the face of impossible odds, people who love this country can change it.” One of the best ways for us to do that is by getting active in our communities, our government and local Democratic Party. If we want to change the politics of cynicism into the politics of hope, we can best do it from the ground up, from within our own party.
I've learned I have a knack for making the Democratic Party more accessible to the average person, educating them about how the party structure is set up, connecting them to their LD meetings, and getting them engaged as PCOs within the Party. I want to take that to a broader level, getting our average citizens engaged in their government. It's going to take a lot to change politics in this country, and getting people active is step #1.
Here is information on how you can be an agent of change as a PCO and how to get elected (or re-elected) to a Democratic Party PCO position. I hope you all read it and consider it as a way to be the change we seek: http://www.obamadelegates.org/page/Be+an+Agent+of+Change--Become+a+PCO
The responsibility of a National Delegate is to 1) Cast an unwavering vote representing Washington State’s support for Senator Obama, 2) Work on garnering further support from Obama, be it from pledged delegates or unpledged superdelegates. 3) It is also an opportunity to attend optional trainings, breakouts, and caucuses to build coalitions, share ideas, and start MAKING CHANGE. When considering who to cast your vote for in the upcoming election, make sure you vote for someone who will take full advantage of the optional additional trainings at the convention, and bring those valuable new skills back to share with our group.
Support from Obama Volunteers and Democratic Party Leaders:
“Shanna has been a valued member of the Washington State Grassroots Obama organization for well over a year. She's been extraordinarily active in the Seattle area, and has helped the statewide group to fund raise and acquire material from the campaign to create additional support across the state."
-Marsha Scutvick
Snohomish County for Obama
1st CD Alternate, National Convention
"I know of no one in the entire state that has single-handedly done so much to help Barack Obama. Shanna's early, tireless, and selfless work paved the way for Obama's victories at the caucuses and primary here in Washington. At the same time, she's mentored and trained dozens of young new Democratic Party activists. I fully support and endorse Shanna's well-deserved trip to Denver as a National Delegate".
-Javier Valdez, WA State Dems Executive Boardmember, 7th CD Chair, 46th LD Chair
“Got a question or a concern? Who ya gonna call? Always, always, always the answer to that question for me since I began learning all things political has been Shanna Sawatzki. No matter what time of day or night, she has been there for me, teaching me, guiding me, introducing me to people I need to know, whatever it takes to help me be an effective organizer. I literally could not havebeenan Obama LD Coordinator for the 34th District without her constant and gracious support. We need Shanna in the Delegation to Denver. Her experience, dedication and effervescence will keep the Delegation in good spirits and in the right place at the right time every step of the way. Vote For Shanna!!!
-Artemis OakGrove, Obama LD Coordinator, 34th District
"Shanna has been a very positive force for the Obama grassroots effort in Washington State. I consider her an authoritative source on matters of policy and procedure, and have relied on her numerous times to help clarify matters that I as a new PCO and campaigner found confusing. Her energy and enthusiasm help get us out of the slumps and keep us moving toward the goal. She deserves the honor, and the campaign deserves her loyalty and spirit."
-Cheryl Kopec, Pierce County Veterans for Obama founder
"Shanna has worked tirelessly for Obamain Seattlefrom early on in the campaign. She has always been hardworking, upbeat and positive and the Seattle organization wouldn't be as vibrant as is it is today without her hard work and dedication right from the beginning."
-SueEllen Lawton, Whatcom County for Obama Steering Committee
“I have been an active Democrat for 28 years and rarely have I seen a fellow activist be so right about a candidate so soon in the process. Shanna defines the term early adopter. She recognized Barack Obama's greatness long before the rest of us were even giving him a second look. Her Spring 2007 "Bowling for Obama" events are legend in the 36th District. It was at these events that she recruited many of Washington's leaders in the Obama campaign.”
-Peter House, Chair, 36th District Democrats
7th CD Obama Sub-Caucus Chair
“Shanna Sawatzki has been a leader in the grassroots movement in Washington State to elect Barack Obama. She has been a tireless and dedicated volunteer and has always managed to bring people together to share their talents and knowledge effectively. Her patience, judgment and character truly exemplify the spirit of Barack Obama and his hopeful goal to heal our nation.”
-Howie Martin, Obama Volunteer, Blogger, Webmaster: SeattleforBarackObama.com
“I heartily support Shanna Sawatzki for At-Large Delegate because she's a ‘work horse’ not a ‘show horse,’ a ‘perennial’ not an ‘annual.’ This lady came to her first 36th District Democrats meeting while I was Chair, and introduced herself. ‘Hi, I'm Shanna. What can I do to help?’ And in the years since then she has done just that, at all levels.
“Theexperience, the savvy, the passion, will be there during the campaign, and she's got morethan almost anyone I know. More important, she'll be there after the campaign, to continueto contribute, to inspire and to work for our principles and effectiveness.”
-Judith Hine, Chair Emeritus 36th District Democrats
Obama Delegate to the WA State Convention
"Shanna has been one of the primary grassroots organizers in the State of Washington since the beginning of the campaign. She is capable, hard working, and deserving. The campaign has repeatedly turned to her for help in executing a variety of important organizing tasks throughout this effort. If you want people in the delegation who are able to work on our behalf in case of a floor fight, Shanna should top the list."
-Lou and Carol Frillman
Obama for America National Finance Committee
Obama Delegates to the WA State Convention
“Shanna has worked very hard and incurred lots of expense to help nominate Barack Obama. She has been quite active in garnering support among Democratic partyinsiders. In addition to organizing several fundraisers and meetingsshe has been a force for getting timely information out to the Washington grassroots network. She personally recruited several PCO's. It was on her advice that I became a PCO over a year ago.”
- Mark Mildragovich, Volunteer Coordinator, Washington for Obama Grassroots
"Shanna was one of the earliest and strongest supporters of Barack Obama over the last 15 months. I first saw her spreading the word about Obama when I marched with her in the 2007 Pride Parade in Seattle. She co-organized the group and helped provide the buttons and flyers. They were the only presidential campaign to show up at either of the parades that year.
“More than that, Shanna was one of the people who inspired me to stay involved after the 2004 election turned out so badly. I remember that she had hurt her ankle, and she was scooting around on her wheeled cart doing as much work as any of us. That kind of dedication is something you don't see very often.
"Please strongly consider electing Shanna to go to Denver as an At Large Delegate or an Alternate. I can't think of anyone who deserves it more."
- Chad Lupkes, King County Democrats, 46th LD Exec Board, Obama Delegate to the WA State Convention
"Shanna is at the top of my list. Every year, she mobilizes thousands of voters for Democrats, inspires new people to join the cause and makes us a stronger party. With your vote, she'll turn the excitement of Denver into victory in November.”
-James Apa, WA State Dems Committeeman
Obama Delegate to the WA State Convention
“Shanna worked without pay and without credit, she worked in the shadows, she worked like a young Harvard Law graduate on the south side of Chicago motivated by the belief that he too could make a difference. Shanna worked for a movement of change. Shanna has been there throughout. I've personally seen her open her home up to people in the community and work late nights for the Democratic Party. I've seen her and her husband, Jason, always there and quick to volunteer in jobs big or small, always there to help out in whatever way they could.
“I urge you, to do what you can to include this combination of all we've been talking about this election, I urge you to include amongst the Washington State delegation someone that is change and is experience. I urge you to include Shanna Sawatzki among the delegation that goes to Denver this August.”
-Brent Meyer
Obama Precinct Captain
“To say that Shanna Sawatzki deserves considerable credit for Obama's overwhelming success in Western Washington is not an exaggeration. Hers is the voice not just of passion, but of passion filtered through the intellect, strategy, and organization of a leader and great communicator. Her accomplishments are too long to list;her endorsements read like a who's who. Simply put, she gets the job done and enlists converts along the way. Her ability not only to lead but to identify and nurture others into becoming leaders is her great strength. Talk to her for 5 minutes and you'll be empowered; talk to her for 15 and you'll be organizing your neighborhood. Why send Shanna to Denver? Because we need her there.”
-Sim Larkin, PCO 36-2504
Washington State Delegate 2004, 2008
“It is my pleasure to add my recommendation to Shanna Sawatzki’s bid to become a National Delegate to the Democratic National Convention in August. I remember, when she and I first got acquainted at an "Obama Meet-Up" in February, 2007; it was my first foray—in spite of my advanced age!—into any kind of organized politics. I give Shanna credit for helping to educate me quickly into the ways and workings of a grassroots campaign, and enabling me to have an incredible experience working with the outstanding Obama grassroots team from the Seattle area. I know she will be a steadfast representative of our views, and will continue her staunch support of Senator Obama's nomination at the DNC and beyond.”
-Marj Rauning, Obama volunteer since early 2007
“The Obama campaign is an amazing magnet for intelligent, creative, energized individuals who focus their talents for a common purpose. I have met so many outstanding people but amongst all of the gems one individual stands out and that is Shanna Sawatzki. Shanna has been a source of constant inspiration for me and in my view represents the future of the Washington State Democratic Party.”
-Jody Rodgers, Obama Grassroots Buttonmaker
Obama Delegate to the WA State Convention
From 2004 to the present, Shanna Sawatzki has worked tirelessly to bring new voters into the Washington Democratic Party, making them welcome, and support ing them in becoming effective organizers, first with the Howard Dean campaign; and as far back as February 2007, as a tireless and savvy organizer and fundraiser for the Obama campaign. Shanna has a depth of experience in political organizing, working with local democratic party leaders and national political campaigns that will be a great asset to Washington's national Obama delegation.
-Kelley Bevans, Webmaster, Obama08-WA.com
Washington for Obama Grassroots Website
“Shanna embodies what this grassroots campaign has been about. She, more than most, is responsible the amazing ground swell of support for Sen. Obama in Washington.”
-Matthew McSheehy, Caucus Location Coordinator
Obama Delegate to WA State Convention
"If I could vote for at-large delegates Shanna would get mine, just as she did in our Congressional District Caucus. She has been instrumental both to the grassroots campaign and to being the change we seek within the Democratic Party, both through active personal involvement and encouraging others to get involved. Plus, Shanna is personally responsible for nearly doubling my bowling score! I know her to be dedicated, creative, articulate, empowering of others and alot of fun. What more could you want in a fellow delegate?"
-David Ginsberg, Dedicated Obama Volunteer
Obama Delegate to WA State Convention
“Shanna absolutely deserves to go to Denver. The first event I ever attended was organized by Shanna: "Bowling for Obama." It was great fun, and started me down the volunteering path. I worked with Shanna as a Co-Caucus Location Captain, and can attest to her tireless energy and devotion, the depth of her knowlege and experience, and her skills as an organizer and motivator. Later, when the long process of tallying votes for the 46th LD delegates ran over our time available at Ingrahm HS, she invited the entire team into her house to continue the work, late into the night and into the next afternoon, showing incredible grace even as we comandeered her bed for the counting process...now that is dedication!”
-Dietrich Biemiller, Obama Caucus Location Coordinator
"As an older person I have been concerned regarding the lack of participation in support of our democracy by the younger generation. When I first met Shanna and her husband in 2004 she was new to active participation in the democratic party. She "jumped right in." She did her homework to become knowledgeable on the issues and to gain an understanding of the party. She held several offices in the 36th district since 2004 and took each seriously, making it a priority while at the same time working a full time job.
“I watched her grow from a novice to a sophisticated Democrat able to think on her feet and be informed of that which she spoke. She can inspire others to listen to her. I saw her put aside her personal plans and lead an effort to cover an emergency. The issue had to do with losing votes that had been caged by the republican party. It required a lot of organization and effort. I would ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend her as a delegate to the national convention."
-Elizabeth Stanton, 36th LD Democrat, Obama Volunteer
"Over the last few months when our paths have crossed while working on the Obama Campaign in Seattle Shanna has been an inspiration to me by her dedication to the task at hand and her creativity in attracting supporters to the campaign. Her tireless work on behalf of the campaign and the Democratic party sets an excellent example to those of us who have come in contact with her."
-Daniel O'Brien, Alt Delegate to WA State Convention
“My first ever political campaign fundraising event was Bowling for Obama, which was organized by Shanna Sawatzki. I volunteered to be a Precinct Captain and was trained by Jayron Finan and Garaub Bansal on the ins and outs of the caucus process. Jayron and Garaub were recruited, mentored and trained by Shanna Sawatski. On June 1 2007, I attended a Barack Obama rally at WaMu Theatre at Quest Field. As it turns out, Shanna Sawatzki was directly involved with organizing this event. Shanna’s talent, hard work, knowledge, experience and commitment to both the Obama Campaign the Democratic Party make her an obvious choice for At Large Delegate
-Wendy Berry, Obama Caucus Location Coordinator
